Time to Register for Curling Programs Beginning in January
Nugget Column #12 – Tuesday December 6th, 2016
With the North Bay Granite Club’s new seasonal schedule, it’s never too late to start curling!
In the past, and still at other curling club’s today, it was common practice to have an Open House in September for curling beginning after Thanksgiving and running until Easter. Curlers new and experienced signed-up for six months of curling and paid the according fees.
Today we’re finding this doesn’t work exceptionally well for us.
People, perhaps more than ever, are interested in trying curling thanks to the ever-increasing exposure it receives on television, its involvement in the Olympics, and the major events North Bay has been able to host locally.
People want to try curling, but not for six months. Truly “trying” something means that there’s a way out should the experience not be positive (and we understand that curling is not for everyone). That is why our club now offers a schedule and starts and stops every seven weeks. Our seven-week Fall Season will come to an end on December 22nd, and a Winter Season will begin on January 2nd. Most of our leagues and instructional programs will restart and provide an opportunity for those who were not enjoying themselves to depart and try something else, while simultaneously allowing newcomers to have a go.
Our most successful program that is taking registrations now for January is titled “Adult Learn to Curl”. This is a seven-week instructional offerings that runs Wednesday evening from 6:30pm – 8:00pm and leads players through drills and scrimmages that will best prepare them for participation in a club league when our Spring Season begins in late February.
Members and curlers from the past who are no longer with the club may also be excited to learn that they could return into one of our various leagues for a shortened period. We all have busy times in our lives when extra-curricular activities get set aside, or maybe we’re seeking warmer weather for a portion of the winter. Make some time for yourself and get curling, if even just for seven weeks this season.
Here’s a complete list of leagues taking new registrations for the new year: Senior Men’s League Mondays at 10:00am and Wednesdays at 11:30am beginning January 16th and 18th, Day Ladies’ League on Tuesdays at 9:30am and Thursdays at 9:30am beginning January 3rd and 5th, Evening Ladies’ League on Mondays at 6:00pm beginning January 2nd, Open League (teams of men and/or women, multiple skill divisions) on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30pm and 8:30pm beginning January 3rd and 5th, Open Doubles League on Wednesdays at 8:15pm beginning January 4th, Junior League (Grade 7 – 12) on Wednesdays at 3:45pm beginning January 4th, Adult Learn to Curl on Wednesdays at 6:30pm beginning January 4th, and Adult Learn to Curl BETTER on Sundays at 4:00pm beginning January 8th.
