Nugget Column – Tuesday May 2nd, 2017
Just when you thought curling was over, the North Bay Granite Club is preparing for one if its largest attractions of the season.
Forty teams are expected to converge on North Bay come July 7-9, 2017 for a superhero themed curling bonspiel in the middle of summer. The sixth annual event sponsored by Hinduja Global Solutions at 390 Lakeshore Drive is known for it’s entertainment filled itinerary including live entertainment Friday and Saturday nights, karaoke, meals provided throughout the weekend, costume contests, and more.
While all curlers, skilled or just beginning, are encouraged to partake in the Summerspiel; there are already several high-profile participants entered into the event.
Tracy Fleury and Amanda Gates of the 7th ranked women’s team in Canada are back, as well as this past season’s Canadian Mixed champion skip Trevor Bonot, who will be here only months before departing to the World Mixed Curling Championships in Switzerland.
The 2017 Canadian U18 curling champions will be in the house, including the entire girls’ Team Brunton, and boys’ skip Jacob Horgan who is hooking up with two-time Canadian Junior medalist skip Tanner Horgan and 2017 Canadian Junior silver medalist and Canadian University curling champion Laura Masters.
This season’s Ontario Scotties runner-up and Champions Cup semi-finalist Melissa Foster is returning with Canadian Mixed Champion husband Scott Foster to defend their Summerspiel titles from 2016 and 2014.
While we have not mentioned them all, there are other accomplished curlers looking forward to the laid back and non-competitive environment provided at North Bay’s popular Summerspiel. Not signed up yet? Get a move on because there are only five teams spots remaining.
