Nugget Column #18 – Tuesday February 2nd, 2015
Look up the word “momentum” in the dictionary and you would find a photo of Claude Peloquin and his foursome from the North Bay Granite Club coming out on top of a twenty-two team field at the 36th annual Masters Bonspiel.
I think it would be fair to say that Peloquin with teammates Dave Cerisano, John Stuckless and Gene Desjardins have mastered the masters. Champions since 2010, this win marks their sixth consecutive sweep of the popular 60+ men’s curling event.
It’s not that competition isn’t fierce; the highly regarded team of Brian Fawcett with Gary Preston, Owen Fleming and Alex Jackson finished second while Real Gagnon and Mac Allen skipped notably skillful teams into the semi-finals.
In the B Division Roger Moreau of New Liskeard led his team of Eddy Willard, Peter Muraska, and Neil Loah to victory, capturing the Gerry Lynett Memorial Award over Wayne McLeod, Bruce Peters, Ray Lessard, and Mike Tann of Elliot Lake.
The C Division resulted in Robert McIlvenna, Mike Gaudette, Gilles Adam, and Lou Lafrance of Sudbury defeating local curlers Brian Whitehead, Jim Curran, Marcel Lefebvre, and Tom Piper.
And the D Division was locked up by Moe Laporte, Don Peterson, Les Leroy, and Keith Conrad of the Granite Club who overcame Jim Graham’s troop from Elliot Lake.
All in all, the event went off without a hitch thanks to the organizing committee chaired by John Burns. Already we are looking forward to January 25th – 27th, 2015 – the 38th annual Masters Bonspiel and the 7th annual Claude Peloquin Championship Final.
On January 30th and 31st Special Olympics Ontario packed our venue as part of a six-event Winter Games held throughout the community.
Eighty athletes in addition to coaches, family, friends and spectators squeezed into the Granite Club to be part of a unique and extraordinary event for the City of North Bay and its citizens.
Following are the results from the curling event:
A Division: Gold – Manitoulin, Silver – Weston, Bronze – Illderton
B Division: Gold – Kincardine, Silver – Welland, Bronze – Brockville
C Divison: Gold – Kingston, Silver – Mississauga, Bronze – Owen Sound
D Division: Gold – Soo Curles, Silver – Grimsby, Bronze – Collingwood
While by the end of the day Saturday there were winners and there were losers, it was impossible to distinguish the two. Smiles from ear to ear, tears of joy, and words of encouragement were contagious.
A special thanks to Curling Coordinator Karen Cobb, her committee members Cathy McCallum, Patti Callahan and Mike Callahan plus the numerous volunteers who supported all sorts of functions that resulted in a memorable event for the athletes.
Up next is the Mixed Section’s annual Sweetheart Bonspiel. Gather two and guys and two gals and register for the Valentines weekend event featuring food, entertainment and well… curling.
